If you want to watch a movie that will be both entertaining and thought provoking, consider a free download of the movie Equilibrium. I do not know what it is rated, but I assume it will be pretty intense, so it might be best to preview it before considering it for a family film. But, the message of the picture is pretty clear.
Based on the same premise of the book 1984 by George Orwell, society has opted to do away with emotions to prevent any chance of encountering a world war IV. Essentially, any independent thought or emotion is discouraged. In fact, it becomes against the law to do anything other than go with the flow.
Reading books is strictly forbidden, because the practice may cause someone to have an independent idea or desire. Therefore, all books have been destroyed. Any books that even remain on the planet are only saved because of the efforts of a group of underground people that value freedom.
If caught, the people are severely punished or killed, to keep order in society and prevent discord of any kind. Law enforcement requires invasions of suspect homes, burning of any books found, and swift punishment of the offender.
To keep citizens from offending, people are injected with an anti-emotion drug. If a dose is missed, long-forgotten emotions rise to the surface and people start to remember the value of freedom. Thus, like the book, Equilibrium is about the price of freedom and the potential result of giving freedom away.
Can this really happen? Doubtful. But, consider the message. The value of independent thought is unimaginable. What would life be like if everyone on the planet was essentially the same? What if procreating was simply an act to keep humanity from going extinct? Imagine never reading a book, watching a movie, or even watching television because it might give someone an idea.
Equilibrium will give the viewer a glimpse of the possibilities when freedom of thought is restricted. It will also give an idea of what people will do to protect the ability to read, write, and think independently. Enjoy!
