"The Sopranos" literally took center stage at the Emmy Awards last night.

The mob saga won honors as TV's best drama along with awards for writing and directing but it did not dominate the night as many expected.

James Spader of Boston Legal pulled the night's biggest upset, beating out Tony Soprano himself, James Gandolfini, for best actor. "The Sopranos" co-star Edie Falco also missed out. Sally Field of "Brother and Sisters" scored best actress and then got bleeped by censors for her anti-war rant. The NBC comedy "30 rock" was another of the night's surprise winners, beating out last year's winner "The Office" for best comedy. Another upset came with best actor in comedy. Ricky Gervais of "Extras" won but when he wasn't present to accept, presenters Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart improvised. One pre-show favorite who did win was "Ugly Betty's" America Ferrara as best actress in comedy. In supporting acting categories, Jeremy Piven of "Entourage" and Jamie Pressley of "My Name is Earl" were winners in comedy. Terry O'Quinn of "Lost" and Katherine Heigl of "Grey's Anatomy" were winners in drama. Which was appropriate on a night of surprises at the Emmys. "Broken Trail" was honored as best miniseries with acting
