i find this quite a hard thing to be accomplished in a good way. quite often when you read a book then watch the movie of it you can see a vast amount of differences between the two. usually the movie has been altered for a more dramatic effect. this is especially evident in shindlers list where in the movie there is a big uprising of the jews at the end whereas in the book they do become free but it is much more of a struggle. what are your thoughts on this. are there any movies based on books that are actually better??

The real problem is your expectations going in. A movie is not a bookand a book is not a movie. There is no way a movie can be the same thing that a book is. Some are more faithful than others but all adaptions are going to change the original source. Can you name a movie that was adapted to a book that was good? The real problem is your expectation going in that they will be the same.

The one movie I can think of that was better than the book was The Godfather. The book moved too slow for me. That might be because I had seen the movie many times before reading the book though.

There are a few movies based off of books that are amazing, such as the Lord of the Rings series, but no movie made from a book will ever be perfect. They often have to work within a budget, or work within time constraints, so they will almost always cut scenes out of the movies for the sake of time.

i found the stand by steven king to be this way. as well as the rest of his books they made into movies.
however the most desturbing example of this is how they manipulate the comic book world into movies. there are so many things they missed out on with x-men! as well as spidarman and Fantastic four.
