It seems that for years it has been a trend for music artists to delve into film - and many go on to become movie stars too! One that pops in my mind at this moment is Elvis Presley. Unless you've been living under a rock, everyone knows that Elvis was one of the Greatest Music Performing Artists of all time -- who had numerous movie stints. His music was great and many of his movies were ok too. Many of his movies were largely centered around him playing his "musical" self.

Nowadays a lot of music artists, especially many rappers, are stepping outside the box and into some interesting roles. I particularly like rapper Ice Cube's movies. As a rapper Ice Cube is hardcore & street without a shadow of a doubt. But in his movies he often portrays a light-hearted more comedic role. A total contrast in character. Interesting.

Which Music Artist can you name that is at least worth an 'honorable mention' for their long or short-lived movie career...and why :?:

Will Smith is doing OK.
Sinatra won an Academy Award, as did Cher. Sting. Ice-T. A couple of Wahlbergs. Iggy Pop. Queen Latifah. Bette Midler. David Bowie. Bobby Darin.

I think there are a lot more than you would first think. Presence is presence, and it is a large part of commercial success in either of these performance arts.

I usually enjoy Will Smith's movies. He is the only singer turned actor who I can think of that I care to watch in a movie to be honest. Most are only in the movie for their name. Not their acting ability.

I thought that Jennifer Lopez was surprisingly good in The Cell. That was one weird surreal movie but I still love it nearly a decade later.

Will Smith continues to impress me with his acting. He just seems to get better and better with each new release. It's hard not to think of him and still see The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in your mind's eye though.

Johnny Depp has to be on the list. I think he was known in the L.A. music scene as an up-and-coming artist, but the acting took over the musical career, and now he's very famous.

Well I think it would be safer to say that 21 Jumpstreet is what launched Johney Depps Career. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092312/

It was the 90210 of the day but infentitly more interesting since it was about 20 somethings trying to be undercover cops in school.. Anyway Johnny Depp was definently the star..

I'm a huge music buff and I never knew Johnny Depp recorded anything! Thank god - can't think it was any good!

Britney Spears did some TV. And didn't William Shattner do the opposite? he recorded talking versions of a bunch of songs including Elton John's Rocket Man - God he KILLED that one!

But I think I agree Will Smith is the only guy who really made it work... even better then Elvis.

Now what was the best Will Smith movie and song?

I feel like Ludacris is pretty decent as an actor. I don't find Ice-Cube to be that great, personally. Ice-t is ok on Law and Order: SVU. I am drawing blanks on rocker who have made the leap to acting recently. Most of the pop stars that have were awful actors, i.e. Jessica Simpson.

I think that music artists who turn movie star want more money, or they get bored with doing the whole music scene, but lately now a whole lot of movie stars are also starting to sing, for instance, Miley Cyrus ,then again her dad was a singer first before coming a movie star. Now she's got her own sound going. So basically I think their just bored and want to try something new and exciting like acting.
