Bootleg or illegal movie downloads are often cracked down heavily by the Motion Pictures Producers' Association (MPAA) often threatening you with law suits and heavy penalties. Many Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and softwares like Napster were shut down, and for free movie lovers it dealt a serious blow.
Well these days, they are back in force and in new shape. With the possibilities provided by high speed internet networks and unlimited cheap data storage, today you can practically find any movie, new or old, and even those yet to be released on the internet. Bootleg movies have always been a favourite, and they come in various favours.
The simplest way traditionally has been to go into a movie theatre with your camcorder, and record a whole movie and put it up on the internet, after modifying its format to a downloadable one. In some cases, the quality is poor, but in a great many instances they are watch able and done semi-professionally by people who know how to. There are several groups active on the internet who posts these releases, and within hours various networks, torrent sites all start sharing these.
The second group is derived form DVDs, often before release. Generally it is an insider job, who have access to the pre-mastered DVD before official release, and are called pre-DVD releases. In some instances these come from DVDs which the producers have prepared for special screening for award purposes, and are of excellent quality. Remember that these are made available months before commercial release in many instances.
DVD-rips form the third group, after DVDs have been commercially released. Usually they are re-encoded into files about one-sixth the size of normal DVDs with the use of special movie codecs based on MPEG-4 and DivX, allowing quick and easy downloads. With special software often available on movie download websites, these movies can be burnt onto CDs and DVDs again.
There are many ways in which these bootlegged movies are available over the internet. One of the most popular methods are torrents which are a newer form of sharing software that depend on users having copies of the movie on their hard-drives and staying connected to the internet. However, some torrents take a huge time to be downloaded – sometimes up to a week as it all depends on the number of users retaining the movie on their computers. By comparison the speed of downloading movies from movie download sites which directly link you to servers can be 1 MB/second, or 400 times faster with special accelerators. Compared to the old P2P soft wares this is incredibly fast !
The other way of getting bootlegged movies is joining Internet Relay Chat using special software to connect other movie file sharers. Again, this is a cumbersome method taking many hours for a single movie, but one advantage is that because it does not involve the use of internet addresses, it is a safe method of exchanging movie files compared to P2P soft wares. The other problem is that there is no search facility and it can take many hours searching for a particular title.
