I think that movies based on true stories really seem to work. You can get involved and invested in the characters.
What do you think about movies based on true stories?
| I watched the movie "Into the Wild" based on a true story of a young man just out of college. Then of course, I watched "Resurrecting the Champ" based on the story of a reporter. "Pursuit of Happiness" was another one of my favorites based on a true story.

Movies based on true story are usually some of the greatest 'classic' type of movies. These movies usually never die because they are based on fact not fiction. Real life movies connect with people who can relate to it. It stirs the emotions and pulls heart strings.
Absolutely..Cinema would be dead and dull without true stories. For example TITANIC is a masterpiece!
I agree; it like the movies based on true stories because I can really get into them and feel for the characters even moreso than I would if I knew it was a made-up story.
My favorite movie based on a true story is Indictment with James Woods. It's a wonderful movie and I would recommend it to any fan of James Woods, his show Shark or lawyer movies in general.

Tied with Indictment is Lean on Me. The story of high school principle Joe Clark and stars Morgan Freeman. It's a must she for people who enjoy true story movies.
I occasionally like to watch movies that are based off of actual events and stories, but I tend to watch fantasy movies like Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean more often.
While true stories can make awesome movies, not every true story is suitable for a movie, and sometimes a true story makes it to a movie, only to find that it wasn't nearly as good of a movie as it sounded to begin with.
Even with a true story behind it, the need for good writing, compelling direction and convincing acting are still there. It also depends on the actual true story as well as how closely the movie follows the actual events. Some really good movies have been made based on true stories. But I'm sure there are also some real stinkers out there too.
I love movies based on a true story. It makes the movie so much more real. I love Rusell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind. He did an awesome job of portraying John Forbes Nash. I also like Catch Me If You Can with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, Girl, Interrupted with Angelina Jolie and Wynonna Rider and Erin Brockovich with Julia Roberts. They are all amazing movies.
Like anything, it comes down to entertainment. The writing, acting, pace, etc. has to be good or else you could be telling the behind the scenes story on the Earth's creation and it still would not be good. I think some of the best material for true-life films are stories on lesser known people. Catch Me If You Can, mentioned in another thread, is a great example. I knew about this guy because I'm involved in anti-fraud activity, but I'd wager most folk never heard of Frank Abagnale Jr. before the film.
