I don't have just a short list of favorite movies. But I certainly have my favorites!
A few of mine are:
The Snakepit- oldie but goodie. This was one of the most disturbing psychological thrillers I've seen. It was definately ahead of it's time. If you haven't seen it, it's worth checking out.
Napoleon Dynamite- This was such a neat little movie. I loved the characters, and it was just funny.
Amelie- another movie along the lines of Napoleon, just cute and quirky and worth seeing.
Dangerous Liasons- If you liked Cruel Intentions, but didn't see this one, watch it! This was actually the movie that inspired Cruel Intentions. It was a truly twisted, and worth watching flick. Plus I'm a big Malkovich fan.
"Before great brilliance there must be chaos"- Lao Tzu

Ooh, I forgot to put a ClockWork Orange on my list. That was a great movie, and still holds true today. What a great social commentary!

Picking my favorite movies is not easy for me, I love so many lol. Here are a few:

Oscar: Not many would agree with me here but I love it. It would make a great play.
Diggstown: My favorite James Woods movie hands down and another movie that wasn't that popular.
Jeepers creepers: The ending blew me away. It was nice seeing the villain win for a change.
The Mist: Loved the story and the movie had a great twist ending I didn't see coming.
The Friday the 13th series: Good dumb fun.
Fried Green Tomatoes: My feel good movie pick. I dearly love this movie.
Beauty and the Beast: It's my favorite disney movie hands down. I can never watch it enough.
Dawn of the Dead Remake: Most remakes aren't that good but this one was excellent.

I am sure after I hit post about 200 more movies will spring to mind :D

Picking a favorite movie is such a challenge. There are just too many good ones out there.

Personally I've generally leaned more toward science fiction and fantasy. Among recent discoveries I would have to say the made for TV movie "The Hogfather" which is a screen adaptation of the novel by the same name by Terry Pratchett.

Going back a few years.
Alien - The original was still the best, although the technology to make it is now very dated.
Star Wars - Episode IV, when it was originally release just as "Star Wars"
The Bourne trilogy (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
Beauty and the Beast

There are a number of others that could be added to this list.
